This week in maths some of the children in 4K are getting to grips with partitioning numbers in different ways.
In 4K we use manipulatives (e.g. linking blocks) as a stepping stone to developing understanding of new mathematical concepts. The children in this photo are partitioning numbers in three different ways e.g. 53 blocks = 50+3 blocks = 40+13 blocks = 30+23 blocks. Later in the week, the children will apply their understanding to working with pictorial representations of numbers before finally dealing with abstract number problems.
We would like mathematicians to be secure in their understanding of important concepts so that they have a secure foundation to build on in Year 5 and Year 6.
