Protected Characteristics

This week, Year 5 children have been learning about Protected Characteristics during their PSHE lessons. These lessons have taken place to support and teach our children what rights/protection they have as people as they grow up.

What are Protected Characteristics?

  • Protected characteristics are characteristics that are protected by a law called the Equality Act.

  • The Equality Act came into force in 2010 to protect everyone from discrimination and to help society be equal and fair for all.

  • The Equality Act says that people must not be discriminated against or treated unfairly because they have these characteristics.

  • This aims to promote fairness and equality and protect everyone in Britain from discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
