Westdale rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Westdale Junior School has received a Good Ofsted rating in its first inspection under the new Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF), and in the midst of the most challenging period that schools have ever had to face.
Despite the disruption caused over the past two school years by the global pandemic, Ofsted recognised that school leaders want all pupils to benefit from an ambitious curriculum and a rich set of experiences.
The report, published this week, states:
“Pupils’ learning in mathematics is based on well-sequenced and coherent plans. Teachers use appropriate resources to support those who need extra help. Pupils speak confidently about their knowledge and skills in this subject.
“Pupils enjoy developing their writing skills. Teachers encourage them to pay close attention to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Pupils understand how to write different types of text, such as letters, newspaper articles and creative writing. They show pride in their work, taking care to edit and improve it.
“Pupils say that Westdale Junior School is warm and welcoming. They like the extra-curricular activities and the ‘enrichment Wednesdays’. They learn how to be good citizens – for example, through the school’s links with local community organisations.”
Many parents and carers commented on the positive changes in the school. A typical comment described Westdale as a “lovely school where kindness is important”.
Helen Duffy, Executive Head Teacher, commented:
“We are delighted that the school has received continued recognition as an Ofsted Good school that provides an environment for learners to develop, grow and flourish in their learning. I am extremely proud of the whole organisation and all our colleagues for their continued hard work during what has been a challenging period for all, and look now to the future as we further develop our educational offer to provide quality provision across all curriculum areas.”
Rob Slater, Head of School, added:
“We are absolutely delighted to continue to be officially recognised as an Ofsted Good school and I would like to thank everyone in our community for their contributions and continued commitment to improving the lives of the children who attend Westdale. Our young people, their families and our staff have had to show amazing resilience over the past two school years as they have adapted and navigated their way through the many changes forced upon us by the pandemic.”
