History Intent

The history curriculum at Westdale Junior School aims to give the children a well-rounded view of the past and its events. We want to instil in our children a love and passion for history and a sense of curiosity about their past. Our concept-based approach allows children to make connections between different time periods in history. Our current pillars are daily life, invasion and government. We will be using these as vehicles to deliver our intent throughout each year group.

Our history curriculum helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. It is also important to help them to understand their own identity and the challenges of their time. Lessons focus on investigating and making interpretations about the past, building a chronological awareness of events, making comparisons within and between different time periods and using key vocabulary to draw conclusions as a historian.

Central to the curriculum is the respect for historical evidence and the ability of children to make robust and critical use of it to support their explanations and judgments.

Our intent is to deliver a history curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of historic learning and discovery. Progression in learning is clearly mapped from Year 2 to Year 7 in the attached knowledge progression grid.
