Spanish Intent

We believe every child should have access to a broad and ambitious languages curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, in order to encourage a life-long love of languages. Alongside high-quality language learning, we recognise the importance of familiarising the children with key cultural differences between Spanish speaking countries and the UK in order to promote diversity and tolerance of other cultures.

Children will practise their skills in oracy through key questions that increase in difficulty throughout the key stage. We incorporate phonetic knowledge into every lesson, leading to competent and increasingly fluent readers in the language as they begin their secondary education. Scaffolds provide pupils with opportunities to manipulate the written language whilst grammatical elements are broken down and linked directly to our own writing approach so children can form an overview as to how a language works. Provision of sustained practice in communication skills, including using familiar words, phrases and basic language structures broadens and develops vocabulary.

It is intended that when children leave our school, they will have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multi-lingual society it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language. They will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning at secondary school.

Our intent is to deliver a languages curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment of learning and discovery. Progression in learning is clearly mapped from Year 2 to Year 7 in the attached knowledge progression grid.
